Youth and the Second National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy in Nigeria - This is feedback from the process to ensure that youth issues are effectively integrated into the NEEDS 2 (Second National
Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy) being presently finalised by  the Nigerian government. As a brief overview, in August 2006, Development Partnership International carried out a comparative research focusing  on NEEDS and the needs of young people in Nigeria. The research was carried out through a detailed review of literature, particularly from government and World Bank sources, focus group discussion and key informant interviews. The findings of this made it clear that young people's needs are not effectively reflected and addressed in NEEDS and advocacy efforts need to take place to ensure that these are integrated in NEEDS 2. African Youth HIV/AIDS Best Practices Documentation Project - Last year, Development Partnership International, Act Alive and the Standing Committee on RH of the International Federation of Medical Students Associations invited youth-led HIV/AIDS projects throughout Africa to participate in a evaluation process that led to the selection of best practices to be included in the first ever African Youth HIV/AIDS Best Practices Handbook. This initiative is part of a broader project through which the organisations involved wish to gather data on the work of young people in the region for the purpose of showcasing outstanding initiatives at major international events and decision-making forums, providing support and encouragement for these and other youth-led efforts, and creating a centralized body of information which can be tapped for a variety of purposes, from greater youth networking and collaboration to policy formulation at the national, regional, and international levels. The publication will be available on our site during February, so you can check then to read the projects that were submitted. Download African Youth HIV/AIDS Best Practices Documentation Project (PDF) that includes brief description of all the projects.

2006 National Youth Leadership Summit (NYLS) Report - The Second Nigerian Youth Leadership Summit held in Enugu has ended with a call for increased funding to the health sector. Organised by Development Partnership International, the summit is an annual national youth capacity building meeting and inter-generational dialogue, which brings together young leaders and professionals from various backgrounds to discuss critical issues on youth leadership and sustainable national development. This year's summit focused on youth leadership towards better health and sustainable development, and brought together youth leaders from 17 states and the FCT, young Nigerians in the Diaspora, international health development experts, private sector and representatives of the United Nations system. In his opening speech, the Executive Director of Development Partnership International Mr. Dabesaki Mac-Ikemenjima, reiterated that the year 2006 was the most strategic year for youth to focus on health and development issues, owing to the overwhelming emphasis that has been laid on health during the year 2006 through the Abuja +5, the UNGASS +5 events in New York and the World Health Assembly. He said young people hold the key to national health and sustainable development planning, considering their roles in raising awareness and focusing attention on critical policy issues on health development. Chair of the Opening Ceremony Prof. C. O. Nwaorgu, emphasised the need to empower the youth in order to assist them in taking appropriate decisions on issues that relate to their sexuality. Youth and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs): Challenges and Opportunities for Implementation - This report has been formulated by an international team of young leaders from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and incorporates the dialogue of a 3-week online consultation with over 350 youth from around the world. The paper outlines how young people can be included and empowered as part of the strategies that Member States and the United Nations system are creating for the achievement of the MDGs. It can be used as a lobby tool and guide for programmatic action, but ultimately, it is a call to all Member States, UN specialized agencies, and civil society to create mechanisms for youth to participate in the implementation of the MDGs and take advantage of the work and activities youth are already leading. This paper aims to show that investing in youth will provide a long-lasting and effective dividend towards meeting the MDGs through building social capacity for development to 2015 and beyond. The Youth at the UN website has more information about young people and the Millennium Development Goals. For more information go Here.

e-Education in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects a presentation at the 8th UN ICT Task Force Meeting April 13-15, 2005 Dublin, Ireland - Education is the cornerstone of sustainable development. It contributes to building a modern and thriving society and empowers communities and citizens to fully participate in development and prosperity. While the right to education is recognized as fundamental for each citizen, access to it is not guaranteed. In the developing world, the essential building blocks for education systems are suffering from deficiencies, ICT can help respond to these challenges and create the environment that is conducive for effective and quality education systems. The e-education presentation was included in “Harnessing the Potential of ICT for Education – A Multistakeholder Approach – Proceedings of the Dublin Global Forum of the United Nations ICT Task Force.” This overview of the conference contains key presentations and contributions from the event. It captures innovative ideas and initiatives on the use of ICT in strengthening education and communities and highlights the enabling role of all relevant stakeholders. It also introduces case studies of ICT-based projects at the grassroots level and efforts to create a national infrastructure that makes use of new technologies to improve teaching and learning habits.
